Born and raised in Buffalo NY, Mr. Finnigan headed south to attend college at Salem-Teikyo University in Salem, West Virginia. While attending Salem University, Mr. Finnigan studied abroad spending two years in Europe at the University of Berlin, Teikyo Campus. After graduation Mr. Finnigan moved to Roxboro in 1994 and taught in a wide variety of settings in Person County.

He enjoys spending time with his two daughters, Ashton and Fallon, and his wife Vanessa either camping or spending time at the beach.


Greg Hamilton - HamiltonGR@roxborocommunityschool.org

RCS Vice Principal

Mr. Hamilton was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and spent most of his years prior to High School moving between the Washington, DC and Tidewater area. He graduated from Elon College and settled in this area. He has over 15 years coaching and teaching at all different levels and 6 years directing a 15 sport athletics program.

When he is not at school, he and his wife are at the beach. He has three grown children. He could easily be a beach bum or pirate and they are devoted parrot heads.

Ann Wrenn has been with Roxboro Community School since its opening in 2006. She is a native of Rocky Mount, NC but has lived in Person County since she married Personian, Richard Wrenn. Ann and Richard have 2 adult children, Alan and Lindsay, who grew up in Roxboro but now live in Atlanta and Charlotte. The Wrenns have recently become grandparents to Beckett Alexander Wrenn who was born on May 19, 2008.

Mrs. Wrenn graduated from UNCG in 1971 with a BSSA and taught middle school math for 8 years in Person County and has held various positions in business, most recently working at Nationwide Insurance in Roxboro. She is active in the community as a member of Roxboro Woman’s Club, Roxboro Garden Club, Dozen Dizzy Dames Investment Club, and Roxboro Baptist Church.

Wanda Ball - BallWH@roxborocommunityschool.org

Starting her 28th year of teaching, Mrs. Ball earned her National Board Certification in English/Language Arts & has taught English & Drama in grades 6 - 12. A graduate of Berea College, she began student teaching in an open-concept school in Kentucky, has taught in Virginia at Alleghany County High and Covington High, in Maryland at Allegany High School, and in North Carolina at A.L. Stanback in Orange County, and most recently at Person High School, Earl Bradsher and Southern Junior High School in Person County. Mrs. Ball is trained as a NC mentor, is a Certified Writing trainer, a Writing Across the Curriculum trainer, is trained in authentic assessment, is a national workshop presenter for teachers on Socratic seminar and is the co-author of Socratic Seminars in the Block, published in 2000.

Mrs. Ball, a daughter of a coal-miner, is originally from Grundy, Virginia. She is married to Jerry Ball and has one son, Bryce, who is completing his master’s at NCSU. She is a member of Westwood Baptist Church.

Maggie Bonafair - BonafairMT@roxborocommunityschool.org

Mrs. Bonafair will teach Journalism/Creative Writing/Theater Arts. She has 22 years of experience as a professional writer and communications manager. She served as Executive Editor/Project Director of a specialty publishing firm where she was responsible for all aspects of publication management. She also has worked as Communications/Proposals Manager for several high-profile construction and engineering firms where her responsibilities included writing/editing in a variety of formats, from articles, books and brochures to websites, visual presentations and technical manuals. Her teaching experience includes teaching English 111 at NCSU, in-house writing workshops for businesses, and Journalism at RCS last year.

Born and raised in Person County, Mrs. Bonafair graduated from Meredith College with a B.A. in English. She completed graduate studies at NCSU before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, where she lived for 17 years. She returned to Roxboro three years ago after marrying Tim Bonafair. Her stepson, Dylan, is an 8th-grader at RCS. They share their home with their dogs, Bogie and Sinatra.

Mrs. Foushee has taught English/Language Arts in middle school and high school for twenty-one years. She earned her BA in English Education from UNC-Chapel Hill and her M.Ed in Reading from Elon.

Hobbies and interests include appreciation of music (all genres), literature, learning, college basketball, soccer, travel, art and food.

A resident of Roxboro, Mrs. Jones was educated in the Person County School system. She graduated from North Carolina Central University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She is married and has two children ages 4 and 9.

Mrs. Jones taught English I and Journalism/Yearbook for two years at Halifax County High School in South Boston, Virginia. In collaboration with my yearbook students, she also designed and put together the school’s annual yearbook consisting of 176 pages. In her spare time she enjoys reading, gardening, woodworking, and spending time with her family.

I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from North Carolina Central University. In 2003, while teaching at Northern Middle School and attending graduate classes in education, I decided to leave the Person County School System and open a private tutoring center here in Roxboro . We are now in our 7th year of operation. I joined the Roxboro Community School about two years ago and am happy to be here. My title here is Curriculum Assistant which means I have a variety of duties. I am currently teaching a Corrective Reading Class, Core Knowledge, and SAT Prep. I am only here part time, but being here gives me the opportunity to continue doing what I love to do, teach and help students.

Mrs. Stultz is excited to join the staff at RCS. She received her Bachelor's degree in English Education from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and her Master's of Education in reading from Averett University in Danville, Virginia. She has taught mostly middle school language arts during her eight years of teaching. "I basically just like to teach, and I truly enjoy all the ages and stages of student's development."

Beth is a native of Person County and is married to J. Stultz who practices law in Roxboro. She has two children -- a boy and a girl.

He then obtained his Middle Grades Mathematics License as a lateral entry teacher in the Orange County Schools. He obtained his Academically Gifted License through the Alamance-Burlington School System.

Mr. Western will be joining the RCS family this year. He will be teaching 7th grade math, 8th grade math, and 7th grade science. Prior to joining RCS Mr. Western worked for Person County Schools for 5 years. Mr. Western was born and raised in Fayetteville, New York. Mr. Western has his B.S. from Cortland University.

Mrs. Wilkerson has her BS in Mathematics from N. C. State. (Go Wolfpack). Mrs. Wilkerson has taught Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Discrete Math. She has taught for 16 years with Person County Schools and is beginning her 3rd year with Roxboro Community School.

She will be teaching Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra 2, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus this school year with the help of her teaching aide, Mr. Cloud. She says: "I am so excited about this year. To think back at the last 2 years at Roxboro Community School, it was a great 2 years. I am so excited to begin my 3rd year at RCS. I tell people what great kids, parents and faculty we have."

Mrs. Wilkerson has been married to Mike Wilkerson for 37 years. They have a daughter, Courtney, age 27 and a son-in-law, Mike Vincoli.

Mrs. Buchanan grew up in Person County. She earned a BA in Language arts and Social Studies from Elon College. In 1999, she received her Master's Degree in Alternative Education from the Universit y of West Florida. She has taught in public and private schools for 24 years. Outside of teaching, her hobbies include reading and needlework.

A native of Person County, Mrs. King is married to Wells King. A few years ago they adopted a retired racing Greyhound named Gena, who along with a calico cat, Nora, make up their family. “I recently moved to the Flat River community from the big city of Roxboro. It’s much quieter in the country, and Gena enjoys the larger yard.”

Mrs. King holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Elon University and recently graduated with her masters degree in education from the same University. She has been a social studies teacher for the past nine years and has served as a cross country coach. She enjoys reading, running, and recently began bicycling around the countryside with her husband

Shelly Harris graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in social studies education. She has taught high school in Person County for nine years. She has been married to husband Jody for ten years and has a five year old daughter and one year old son. She enjoys being outdoors working in her yard or playing with her children.

Mr. Hill is in the process of relocating to Roxboro from Winston Salem, where he spent a 35 year business career with Sara Lee and Hanes. He has a degree in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has always dreamed of a position in the classroom one day.

Don grew up in Timberlake, North Carolina. He met his wife while working as a summer intern for the Person County Parks and Recreation, and was married at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Roxboro. They have two grown children who live in Atlanta.

Don was a substitute teacher at RCS during 2008-2009, and completed the last month of the school year in US History during Mrs. King’s maternity leave. He will teach World History at the RCS.

Don feels fortunate to have a teaching position at RCS, and is excited to be a part of such a unique learning environment.

Mrs. Slagle will be teaching 7th grade Social Studies. She was born in Buffalo, NY and moved to Roxboro in 2003. She has worked in public schools for the last four years. She is the assistant coach for RCS’ Girl’s Basketball team. Outside of school she enjoys spending time with her husband and reading. Mrs. Slagle is very excited to be working with the RCS family.

Mr. Slagle will be teaching 8th grade Social Studies and coaching the Girl’s basketball team at RCS. He has been teaching in Person County since 2003 and is excited to a part of RCS. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Alfred University and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from AIU. When he is not in school he enjoys playing basketball, spending time with his wife and friends, and playing golf.

Mr. Czysz earned a Master in Physics, taught science at many educational levels, and worked in business and industry before returning to full-time teaching.

At RCS, Mr. Czysz teaches middle school science, earth/environmental science, and physics. He also provides a science enrichment class and teaches physics and astronomy at night at Piedmont Community College

Mr. Ess is a graduate from Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. "I am a Teaching Fellows and have been teaching in North Carolina for a total of seven years now. I was the Pre-K teacher of the year in Pender County of 2007-2008. I am the proud father of two gorgeous girls Olivia Grayson (2yrs.) and Elizabeth Ann (4mon.). My family has moved from Wilmington, NC and is very excited to be a positive part of this community and this extraordinary school."

At RCS, she will be teaching Chemistry and Earth/Environmental Science. Outside of teaching, she enjoys auctions, shopping and needlework.

Mrs. Schukraft is originally from Buffalo, New York where she earned a BA in Health and Wellness at Buffalo State College. She relocated to Roxboro in 2001. Prior to teaching middle school health, she worked with the public school system as Wellness Coordinator promoting healthy eating and physical activity to elementary and middle school age students. She is excited to work with the faculty, parents and students at Roxboro Community School.

Mr. Tuck was born and raised in Roxboro, North Carolina. Pete played baseball for Gardner-Webb University from 1987-1990. Pete graduated from GWU in 1991 and is starting his 18th year as in educator in PE/Health. Pete is looking forward to teaching and coaching at Roxboro Community School.

Ms. Barlow is a graduate of the College of Design at North Carolina State University where she received the Most Outstanding Undergraduate Award for Visual Design. With more than 15 years of experience as a corporate and freelance graphic designer, she followed her heart from computer to easel as the art teacher at Nash Central High School in Nash County before relocating to Roxboro in 2005.

My name is Anne Rand Bettendorf and I am the new part-time art teacher. I graduated from Meredith College in 2004 with a Studio Art degree and returned in 2006 to obtain K-12 Art Education licensure. My most recent teaching experiences have been at Oak Lane and Woodland Elementary Schools. I now have the exciting opportunity to teach former students on a higher art level! The courses I teach include Middle School Art, Photography, and I co-teach Art History/Ceramics with Beth Barlow.

I am married to Justin Bettendorf, the newest RCS counselor. We have a one year daughter named Aurora who keeps us busy outside of school! We are both happy to be a part of the Roxboro Community School family.

Ms. Moore is a Person County native. She received her BS degree in Business Education from Appalachian State University. Ms. Moore has taught Keyboarding, Computer Applications I and II as well as Programming (COBOL, VISUAL BASIC, VISUAL BASIC.NET) and A+ certification for hardware. Ms. Moore continued to keep her certificate renewed by taking courses in the Technology field to stay current.

Ms. Moore retired in January of 2008 & is rejoining the RCS faculty half time this school year. She joined RCS in 2006 and is proud to be returning.

Mrs. Trickey is a life long resident of Person County and a 1984 graduate of Person High School. She holds an A.S. degree in Business as well as a B.S. degree in Business Education. Mrs. Trickey began her teaching career in 1990 in the Person County School System where she remained until joining the staff at Roxboro Community School in January 2008.

Karen is married to David Trickey and they have one daughter, Kayleigh. Kayleigh has been a student at RCS since its opening and is a 9th grade student this year.

Mrs. Trickey is excited to be a part of the RCS family and is thankful for the opportunity to teach in such a wonderful environment.

Mr. Joyner has worked in the private sector technology arena since 1987 beginning in the data processing area, moving into management , and ending up as a consultant. Mr. Joyner grew up in Raleigh and moved to Person County in 1996. In 2003 Mr. Joyner was elected Mayor of Roxboro, where he served two terms before stepping down to direct the Roxboro Development Group, a non-profit group charged with implementing the NC Main Street program in Roxboro. Mr. Joyner now works for RCS where he is responsible for implementing the school’s cutting edge technology plan. He strongly believes in the mission of the school and the desire of the board and staff to bring private sector technology best practices to a public school.

Mr. Joyner is married to Lori and they have one daughter, Emily, who attends RCS. When he’s not working, Mr. Joyner enjoys to spending his time with his family at the beach or doing whatever his wife tells him to do.

Mr. Bettendorf graduated from Northern Durham High School in 2001 and received his BA in Political Science from North Carolina State University in 2006. He recently graduated from North Carolina Central University with his MA in School Counseling, and is looking forward to beginning his career as school counselor at Roxboro Community School.

Vanessa Finnigan was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina. She moved to Person County when she was 4. She was educated in the Person County School system. She is married to Walter Finnigan, principal of Roxboro Community School. They have 2 children, Ashton and Fallon. Mrs. Finnigan enjoys spending time with family and friends, whether it is at the beach or camping at the lake.

Mrs. Finnigan graduated from Person Senior High School in 1987 and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. She has taught elementary and middle school for 17 years.

Mrs. Kimbrough is a graduate of Elon College with a bachelors degree in psychology. She recently graduated summa cum laude from The School of Education at NCCU with a masters degree in school counseling.

"I am a native of Roxboro and have lived here my whole life. I'm married to Van Long and we have two children; Lindsay age 14 and Drew age 11. I have been a preschool teacher for the past four year and prior to that I was a stay-at-home mom. Before coming home to be with my children, I worked as a computer graphic designer at a firm in RTP. I stay very busy with my children's activities but when I have a few free moments, I love to scrapbook. I'm so excited to be working here at RCS with such great students and staff!"

"This year I will be wearing many hats. I will be the Testing Coordinator and will work closely with Mrs. Kimbrough to make sure all our state assessments like EOGs and EOCs are carried out properly. Mrs. Craft and I will be working closely on data management for the Exceptional Children’s program. I will also be working together with the guidance staff to build a first class "college bound" information center for access by our students, parents and staff."


Carolyn Woodall - WoodallCG@roxborocommunityschool.org

Born in Cleveland County, Mrs. Woodall earned a BS Degree in English and Master’s in Guidance Counseling from Appalachian State University. She taught and counseled in Lincoln, Cleveland and Mecklenburg counties before working as a counselor for 20 years at Person High School. She was also the first employee of Bethel Hill Charter School.

Mrs. Woodall married to Leigh Woodall and they have two adult daughters and two grandchildren. Mrs. Woodall is involved in church and community activities, loves to travel, play bridge read, and be “Nana” for Alex and Sarah.

Mrs. Craft graduated from Greensboro College 1986 with a BS in Special Education taught in public schools before going to private tutoring when children came along. She has two children, Ellison, a 10th grader here and Madison who is in 4th grade at Helena.

Elizabeth “Bunny” Smith is joining RCS as a Curriculum Assistance Teacher. Ms. Smith earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree from East Tennessee State University in Psychology and Sociology and her Master’s of Science degree from Radford University in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. She taught University Transfer Psychology Courses in the North Carolina Community College System for over ten years.

Ms. Smith has been married to Dennis for over twenty years and they have a son, Dennis III, a seventh grader at RCS. They are self-proclaimed homebodies and enjoy working on home and yard improvement projects. They love the beach, Hyco Lake boating and water sports. “I am thrilled to be joining the RCS family and community”.



Rafael Rivera - RiveraRN@roxborocommunityschool.org

Mr. Rivera is a native of Puerto Rico. He received a BA Degree from UNC-G in 1970. His first year of teaching was in Mt. Airy, NC. He received an M.ED degree in 1974 and continued his teaching career at Person High School where he created the Spanish Exchange Program. In 2001, he moved to Salisbury and continued teaching at Salisbury High School. He has spent the last four years teaching at Albemarle High School and was selected "Teacher of the Year" for 2007 to 2008. Because of his move to RCS, he was unable to accept the award.



Stephanie Wade - WadeSA@roxborocommunityschool.org

Stephanie Wade is a 1989 graduate of Meredith College with a B.A. to teach French. She has also taken Spanish courses I, III, and IV at various colleges. She has been teaching French for 11 years in Person County Schools and in Durham County Schools.

She also has her certification for English as a Second Language and has taught ESL in Durham Public Schools for 5 years in that capacity. She adores both French and Spanish and teaching grammar and vocabulary to young people.

Joyce Sugg is beginning her fourteenth year of teaching in her hometown of Roxboro. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor’s Degree in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in Math and Science in 1995. Then, she earned her Master’s in Education – Middle School in 1999 from UNCG. In 2006 she obtained her National Board Certification in Early Adolescence Science.

This year, she will also be pursuing an licensure add-on in the area of academically/intellectually gifted. In addition to the joy she finds in working with students, she also enjoys reading and spending time with her husband, family and friends.

Annette Pruitt Slaughter has taught middle school in North Carolina for 20 years. She earned her BA degree in History (English minor) and M.Ed in middle grades education from UNC-Greensboro, and completed her teacher education classes at Wake Forest University. Mrs. Slaughter has certification in grades 6-9 language arts, 6-12 social studies, and K-12 academically/intellectually gifted.

She has also worked as a teacher consultant for NC State University (Humanities/Publications) where she helped create ancillary materials for their recently published sixth grade social studies textbook. Mrs. Slaughter not only enjoys teaching, but she also loves spending time with her husband and family, and reading really good books.

Choral Director Ernie Moore is a Person County native. He received a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1997 and a Masters of Arts in Church Music from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1998. Additional studies were done at James Madison University in 1997. Mr. Moore loves the sound of human voices singing in harmony with one another.

The Roxboro Community School Choir sings a wide variety of music from the classics to folk songs. In addition, students learn music theory, ear training, music history and correct vocal technique during class time. Performance is an important part of the curriculum with the choir giving four concerts during the school year.

Eric Swanson - SwansonEW@roxborocommunityschool.org

Eric Walter Swanson, originally from Maryland, moved to Roxboro in 2001 and assumed the position of Director of Bands at Person High. He remained at this position until joining RCS in 2009. Eric has played and arranged professionally in the Baltimore/Washington Metro areas. He has played The Elliott Ness Ball, The NEA National Convention, The Kennedy Center, Baltimore’s New Year, Artscape and has opened for Ray Charles. Mr. Swanson is a member of The Music Educators National Conference, Tri-M Music Honor Society and The International Trombone Association.
